The Heartcade Team’s Fave Netflix Titles
Written by Helen Guo
Looking for a show to binge watch with your virtual date? The Heartcade Team has got you covered! From action packed series to light-hearted comedies our team has a wide range of preferences. Sit back, relax, and grab a snack as we share with you our current Netflix faves.
Amy: CEO/Founder, Toronto
Sons of Anarchy, Next in Fashion
I was looking for something to watch after I finished Breaking Bad and found the perfect follow up: Sons of Anarchy. The storylines, action scenes, and character arcs are even more intriguing than Breaking Bad in my opinion. I love complicated protagonists and Jax Teller has definitely become my favourite anti-hero. Go in with an open mind. I didn’t know a show about a biker gang could make me feel this way!
As for something light, Next in Fashion was my obsession for a while. I’ve seen every episode 5 times. It’s Project Runway with much more focus on the contestants’ designs and technical skills as opposed to creating drama. The looks are amazing and I was really impressed with the production quality of the show.

Good Girls, Cable Girls, Kingdom
I like Good Girls/Cable Girls because they focus on female-centred friendships and the strength that it brings. They’re also older, which I like, because it's not often that stories about women outside their 20's are featured. And the storylines show really great character development and are mildly soapy (which I like).
Kingdom is another fave! It's beautiful and super suspenseful (keeps you on the edge the entire time). I like how it’s one of the few kdramas without any romance but weaves a lot of complex problems together (ie. the immediate zombie problem vs. the overarching political one). The director also cares a lot about their craft, so everything from set design to costumes was carefully done!

The Expanse
Why do I like The Expanse?
Short answer: Because power suits are amazing.
Longer Answer: I love The Expanse because it has spectacular visuals that combine film noir, murder mysteries, political thrillers and horror films all into one! I also greatly appreciate the attention to detail when it comes to the scientific aspects of the show, which only adds to the existing (possible) realism of the futuristic plot.

Snowpiercer
For sure Snowpiercer! The show is an absolute thriller, but it also makes you think about issues of social criticism. If you liked Parasite (fantastic Oscar award-winning film) then I would highly recommend Snowpiercer.
Pro-tip from Seoyoung: Sweet bean jelly + Snowpiercer = maximum enjoyment
Ian: Developer, Toronto
Bojack Horseman
I think people underestimate how difficult this question is (what is your favourite Netflix show?). There are so many great shows to choose from. I guess if I had to pick a fave I’ll go ahead and say Bojack Horseman because it hits different. The humor and the topics that the show tackles hits home. The characters are also super relatable. Oh, and that theme song is a go to jam any day!

Game of Thrones, The Punisher
My favourite show of all time is Game of Thrones. This series brought grimness and brutality back, offers many unexpected turns, and the plotline is super creative. Their cliffhangers and action-packed scenes are also a huge plus. Unfortunately, GoT isn’t on Netflix.
If I had to choose a Netflix show, it would be The Punisher because it is action packed but also stress relieving. Something about watching outlaws pay the price for their actions is just satisfying.

Ozark, How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)
Hi, I’m the author of this article and I hope you’ve learned a little about our team through this post! I’ll wrap up by giving my personal recommendations.
Like Amy, I’ve been on the hunt for a good show to rival my all-time favourite series (Breaking Bad) and I must say that Ozark is a fantastic contender. Many drug-crime shows fall under the shadow of Vince Gilligan’s brilliance but this Netflix original holds its own. The series is fast paced and features morally grey protagonists you can’t help but root for.
However, if you’re in the mood for something less intense, then How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) is the perfect drama comedy to binge (can you spot my preferred theme yet?). The pop-culture references made in the show are ridiculously up to date, and while the characters embody typical teenage tropes the show is still complex enough to hold your attention. The show is also in German, so you’ll be able to see if your date is a dub or sub kind of person (very important information to know).
